Under the Tree: Photographs of Christmas Past

October 23, 2009January 10, 2010

An exhibition of vintage Christmas photographs in the Keystone Gallery recalls a times when photographs were still taken only for special occastions. Professional photographers took the earliest photographs, which offer glimpses into how Christmas was celebrated at the end of the 19th century. Formally posed families stand by their old-fashioned trees and eye the photographer with serious expressions, as was then the custom. After the invention of the small box camera at the turn of the 20th century, everyone could take pictures, which slowly became more informal. This exhibition gathers a selection of original and often intimate home photographs of families during the holidays from the 1800s through the 1940s.
