Visitors to the Taft Museum of Art can gain insight into the Netherlands through the Museum’s renowned collection of works by Dutch old masters and late 19th-century Hague School paintings. In the winter, the Museum will host the exhibition Dutch Utopia, featuring American artists—many from Cincinnati—who worked in the Netherlands during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

But for those who want to learn even more about the land of tulips and Rembrandt, the Taft is sponsoring an artistic and cultural tour of the Netherlands from April 21 to May 1, 2010. The provider for this trip, International Barging Tours, Inc., has been conducting tours in Europe since 1976. This tour is open to members and patrons of the Taft Museum of Art.

Imagine yourself along the canals and landscapes where the Dutch old masters created their works. Cruise through the provinces of north and south Holland on an exclusively chartered barge. Join art historians to gain knowledge of the great masters of the Netherlands while exploring medieval towns, historic enclaves, and captivating galleries. Experience the beauty of the tulip fields and formal gardens available only in spring.Focus on the history and culture of the Netherlands, its strong economy, and its social programs.

The ports on the trip include Amsterdam, Haarlem, The Hague, Delft, Rotterdam, and Gouda. In addition to organized touring, there is time for independent exploration during many stops.

Some highlights of the visit are:
• Kröller-Müller Museum (Van Gogh  paintings and sculpture garden)
• Rijksmuseum (Rembrandt)
• Frans Hals Museum
• Keukenhof Gardens (thousands of tulips and spring flowers)
• Mauritshuis in The Hague (Vermeer)
• Delft Pottery (oldest surviving ceramics factory in the Netherlands)
• Pilgrims Church (Dutch connection to the Mayflower)
• Catharina Gasthuis (altar panels by Pourbus, Jan Steen)
• St. John’s Church (450-year-old stained-glass windows)

The barge has twelve cabins, each with two beds and a private bath.  Upstairs is a lounge, dining area, and bar. Deck chairs offer lovely views of the ever-changing scenery. The gourmet-quality meals at breakfast and dinner are served by well-trained, English-speaking staff.
